Burnt House Farm - July 3rd 2024

Updated: Nov 12, 2024

On a rainy July 3rd, our members enjoyed an exclusive tour guided by James and Cat Scarff, the enthusiastic owners of a burgeoning vineyard and wine venue. They provided valuable insights into the intricate world of wine production and entrepreneurship as they led us through the lush grapevines. James and Cat discussed the detailed planning and strategic decisions that laid the groundwork for their business, emphasizing the challenges and unexpected obstacles they faced.

Throughout the tour, James and Cat openly shared the difficulties they encountered, giving a realistic view of running a vineyard. They explained how each challenge, from weather uncertainties to market competition, from pest management to data collection, ultimately contributed to their growth and success. Their candid approach not only offered a realistic view of the trials and tribulations in the wine business but also underscored the importance of perseverance and adaptability in achieving success.

James and Cat delved into their utilization of different farming incentives on the farm, exploring how they adapted them to benefit both traditional and vineyard activities. They also considered the positive impact this had on the farm's natural capital assets. As they continued their exploration, James and Cat also considered how the farm's natural capital assets could be effectively incorporated into their day-to-day management. They understood the significance of leveraging these assets to optimize their farming activities while maintaining ecological health. By developing strategies that integrated the farm's natural capital assets seamlessly into their management practices, they were able to create a sustainable agricultural ecosystem.

Even the rain did not dampen the spirit of our members, nor the enthusiasm of our gracious hosts. The engaging and insightful tour gave the gathered farming community plenty to discus and consider for their own farms. To top the evening off, the team shared their wine with our members to demonstrate the full supply chain and contextualise the specifics of the grapes.
